What To Do If You've Been Hacked: A Practical Guide

Has your online security been compromised? You're not alone.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre received an average of 164 cybercrime reports a day in 2022:

But don't let panic take over - we're here to guide you through this stressful time.

Take the case of our client, let's call him Peter. He woke up one day to a nightmare scenario - unauthorised charges on his bank account, suspicious emails sent from his address, and his social media accounts posting without his knowledge.

Peter had been hacked.

Upon confirming the breach, we guided Peter through immediate actions. He not only recovered control over his accounts but also got his stolen funds returned by the bank.

Here's how SafetyNet Cyber Security stepped in to mitigate the hacking incident:

  • Change Passwords: One of the immediate steps we took was to change all passwords. This crucial step stops hackers from gaining further access to Peter's accounts.
  • Implement Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): We implemented two-factor authentication across all of Peter's accounts. This added security layer means even if a hacker has the password, they won't be able to gain access without the second form of verification, typically a code sent to Peter's mobile device.
  • Set Up a Password Manager: To ensure that Peter's new passwords remain secure and unique, we set up a password manager. This tool generates and stores complex passwords, reducing the risk of password reuse or easy-to-guess passwords, a common entry point for hackers.
  • Credit File Activity Alerts Setup: To safeguard Peter's financial future, we also set up credit file activity alerts. This measure notifies Peter of any changes to his credit file, ensuring that he's the first to know if any suspicious activity takes place.

With our assistance Peter reported the incident to the Australian Cyber Security Centre, run by the Federal Government's elite cyber taskforce. Backed by our comprehensive evidence brief, we managed to convince the bank to return his funds.

Today, Peter has regained control of his digital life and implemented strong preventive measures against future attacks.
